To mod or not to mod, that is the question...

My apologies to everyone. Please excuse the length of this post. What else does a retiree have to do on a rainy day on Long Island?

Who says I can’t beat a dead horse?

In another discussion, on another thread, it was brought up that making modifications to Mother’s baby Stewie was a foolhardy, blasphemous, sacrilegious, profane, immoral, corrupt, depraved, sinful, wicked, and evil, thing to do. (OK, I’m indulging in a bit of hyperbole here, for the sake of gratuitous humor) Mother Honda, after all, has produced a perfect product and how dare we mere mortals mess with her child Stewie.

There is no disagreement that Mother did go out on a limb when she put Stewie into production. Stewie is small, noisy, has a 6 speed shifter, and can be a bit “twitchy”. Clearly Stewie was not designed for the masses. From a technological perspective, Mother went our of her way to design a fine handling sports car in every sense of the word. That being said, there were still entities that the engineers had to account to other than the laws of physics. Federal regs, State regs, the EPA, the bean counters and others. Some compromises had to be made along the way.

So, some of us choose to do modifications to try to improve the performance on an already excellent automobile. Perhaps it is few more ponies we seek, or better handling or braking. For some, dropping the chassis an inch or two, adding stiffer springs, or bigger tires makes all the difference. For others an exhaust or cold air intake may do the trick. Sometimes our efforts are in vein, but trying is sometimes half the fun.

There are other reasons for doing modification too. My feeling is that in this cookie cutter world we seek to establish our individuality. By owning Stewie we have already made the first step, but it’s not enough for some. For others I think our favorite ride becomes a sort of mechanical mistress. As the object of our affection, we like to bestow gifts on her, so she knows, yes, we really do love her. In either case the result is the same. We end up doing mods. From adding color matched valve stem covers to full blown body work, many of our brethren like to distinguish themselves from the crowd (even if it’s a small crowd of Stewie owners) or to figuratively, show the world (and Stewie) how much we really do love this automobile. My advice to all of you, who want to mod, ........ go for it!

And to you stalwart “bone stock” Stewie lovers, it’s OK, just remember to use premium and Stewie will love you too.

Best Regards
Pablo

Agreed. Just don't ask me what to do. It's YOUR car do what YOU want.

G3 You are so right. I might ask, what you did. I might ask how you did it. But never, NEVER what I should do.

Anyway, Baby talks to me and tells me what she wants, just like Mrs Pablo

It's easy buddy, but you've got to be familiar with par-bolin'......'n it really helps to know how to skin them correctly.

Remind me of a story. I'd never eaten cat fish or hush puppies until I went down south. Decided I liked them, so when I got back home I bought some. Well, we weren't sure how to fix them so I phoned someone down in Memphis.

He laughs and says, "Oh you gotta skin em, just like you do a squirrel!". Didn't know you could even eat a squirrel, much less how to skin them. But then I'm just a city boy. If it doesn't come wrapped in plastic, we can't deal with it.
