Honda's New S2000 Unveiled

Honda has introduced the new S to be shown at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon.
The S2000 Modulo Climax is an "exhibition model" with updates to the old S2000. Interior is black and burgundy. Very similar to the retired S IMO.

Honda has announced that their company display at the upcoming 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon will including the new S2000 Modulo Climax, a modern concept vehicle based very closely on the same Honda S2000 that left production over three years ago – possibly hinting to the revival of the sporty rear drive Honda 2-door roadster.

It is not unusual for an automaker to bring out a concept car to an auto show (especially an auto show in their home country) so it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Honda would decide to introduce a concept car based on the popular S2000 at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. What is odd about this is that the first images of the Honda S2000 Modulo Climax Concept appear to be almost identical to the old Honda S2000 – a car which went out of production in June 2009 due to extremely slow sales throughout the global markets where the sporty rear wheel drive roadster is offered.

The Honda S2000 Modulo Climax Concept features the majority of the exterior styling cues from the production version of the Honda S2000 last built in 2009 with the main exceptions being a revised front end, rear end and interior which the Japanese automaker refers to as cutting-edge aeroform design and a chic interior. Up front, the S2000 Modulo Climax Concept wears a unique lower fascia that has a silver bar running across the entire front end with fog lights (or maybe driving lights) integrated into this silver bar. Around the central section of this silver bar is an opening that is larger than the central air opening on the previous production Honda S2000 with a “nose” that protrudes out further than the old production models.

Out back, the Honda S2000 Modulo Climax Concept sports the same low profile molder spoiler with an integrated 3rd brake light and the same clear lens style taillights as the 2009 production S2000 but in addition to the canard-style twin spoilers mounted on the rear corners of the trunk lid, the S2000 Modulo Climax Concept gets a unique lower rear fascia with a vastly more aggressive design aided by vents on the outer corners, black cladding around the dual exhaust and a new exhaust setup. Also visible from the rear end is the new headrest molded supports that begin near the top cover and extend forward to the rear of the driver and passenger seats rather than the rollover bar design featured on the 2009 S2000 production roadster.

Inside, the Honda S2000 Modulo Climax Concept benefits from a sporty interior finished heavily in leather with the mostly black layout accentuated by dark red leather bolsters in the seats while more red accenting found in the stitching on the seats and on the steering wheel finish off the interior package of this Tokyo Auto Salon concept car.

Prior to production of the Honda S2000 ending in the summer of 2009, the Japanese automaker had planned a new generation of their popular rear wheel drive roadster but the sharp economic downturn that began in 2008 caused the company to cancel plans of a new S2000. It seems incredibly odd that Honda would just decide out of the blue to design a concept car around a production model that was laid to rest almost 4 years earlier. It seems very unlikely that Honda plans to revive the S2000 with an exterior design that is nearly identical to the previous generation with the exception of a new front fascia, rear fascia and interior design. However, we are led to wonder if the Honda S2000 Modulo Climax Concept is a hint that the Japanese automaker is working on a new version of their sporty rear drive roadster.

There has been an influx of new rear wheel drive sports cars to hit the global market with the most popular being the identical coupes offered by Toyota, Scion and Subaru. Considering the popularity of those models combined with the success of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Big 3 American muscle cars – perhaps Honda feels that it is time to bring back a rear wheel drive sports car wearing the Honda “H”.

Looks like an AP1 on which an aftermarket shop has done some work. It seems pretty unlikely this would be what Honda is actually putting out there as a prototype new S2000. I'm thinking the autoblog folks are just looking to stir up some interest. This isn't the kind of economy in which a car maker is likely to put out a pretty impractical vehicle on the market.

Interesting looking, though.

So it sounds like the press release is saying this isn't actually a concept car intended for production by Honda as a new car. It's a car showcasing "exciting approaches to customization."

They very well could be floating a trial ballon to see what kind of interest this thing generates. If its very strong perhaps they will continue on the real roadster they are working on.

Of course the fiscal cliff, crash of the market with consumer confidence on its heels, may spell the end of that just like it did with our Ss.

Look how the taxpayers got their money's worth with the B52. Same plane, different versions here and there! At the end of its now projected service life, the plane will be 90 years old.
Think of the Crown Vic. It keeps going, and going, and...........

They tamed down the front fenders. Doesn't look as aggressive as our S's. Not a big enough hump on the front fenders.

Wtf?! This can't be for real.. It looks like they got lazy and decided to use leftover production parts..also looks like it ran into a freaking Bat'leth or something! And with chrome window trim?! Not only are they the AP1 taillights but the OLD AP1 taillights. Even more surprising is they used the AP1 carpet center console.. I can't speak for everyone but I'm pretty sure the majority of people perfer the AP2 center console. So much wrong with this car, there is no way Honda would show this halfassed abomination like this at the Tokyo Auto Salon..

So now that everyone is posting repeats of every other post, can we all agree that:
1. It's not going to happen,
2. It's composed of all the AP-1/AP-2 S2000 parts that Momma Honda had laying around,
3. It's red,
4. It's a mash-up of AP-1/AP-2 parts,
5. All of this has been posted here at least 100 times in at least 300 different messages?

Does anyone read anything that was posted in the previous 300 messages so that they won't redundantly and repetitively post what has already been posted 280 times previously? (and yes, the redundant repetitiveness is intentional).

Incidentally, it IS a AP-1 interior/console/shifter/radio door/tail lights/cluster (no, not cluster-f*ck...well, maybe on second thought).

I wonder why Honda would show something as lame as that... I mean its an S2000 with a few modifications. I really don't think would perk any attention, or make Honda consider bringing out a new one.

I certainly hope this is the final message on this . Honda isn't briinging it out, it's not going to be built, it's not a production vehicle, it's a mule. If you (generic "you", Wayne) don't know what a mule is, it stands in for a vehicle that may or not be made. This is a display mule for the kitsch that Modulo is thinking about as building to paste on to your (now defunct) S2000. Why they would wait until 4 years after the car is produced to make a line of stick-ons is beyond me (they must need the money or something).

they have this revolutionary new engine in there that's a 2.0L that puts out 240hp!!! can you believe that? even more hp/L than some ferrari's! the rumor is that for those of you who want a little more torque, just wait a few years and then they'll come out with a 2.2L engine that puts out the same hp, albeit with a lower 8200rpm redline, but a little more low end torque.

start saving your pennies fellas!!!

Honda Sticks A Retainer On The S2000, Hopes No One Will Notice It’s Dead
Patrick George
What do you do when you're a car company who has completely given up on your glorious sporting past, but you still want to look like you make something exciting — and you need to make a few bucks selling aftermarket products?

It's simple. You trot out a car that's been dead for three years after you've stuck a horrendous new nose on it. And that's exactly what Honda has just done at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Remember the S2000, the riotous rear-wheel-drive sportscar that used to be made by the people who now sell the Accord Crosstour? Well, it's back as the unfortunately-named S2000 Modulo Climax, all gussied up with a new silver, LED-filled retainer across its front bumper.

Motor Trend reports that the S2000 Modulo Climax sports a few other tweaks, including 10-spoke wheels, "canard-like winglets" on the trunk, big exhaust tips, and fancy stitching on the steering wheel and seats.

Now, before you start to think that Honda is bringing back the S2000 and you get all excited, please note that this isn't the case. M/T believes that the concept exists so Honda can show off some new aftermarket parts for the discontinued car. They did the same thing for a while with the NSX.

So if any of you out there have unmolested S2000s, and you've always dreamed of sticking a retainer and "canard-like winglets" on it, congratulations. Your day has arrived.
