ap1 vs ap2 - newbie

Hello everyone. I am looking into buying a s2k and had a few questions I am hoping you can answer.

I have been looking at both an ap1 (2002) and an ap2 (2005). The ap1 has had more owners(3) and is in better shape with lower mileage than the 05 which has only had 1 owner.

Taking test drives, I notice the ap2 shift points seem to be lower. Is this typical? I could easily have it 5th at 40 miles per hour. I don't think the ap1 revved as high at this speed. It also feels like the ap2 is being "held back" and isn't quite as quick as the ap1. I thought the ap2 has more torque than the ap1?

The clutch on the ap1 needed to be let out more than the ap2. Again, is this normal? The ap2 drove better but it wasn't a huge difference. Two cup holders!!!

When I checked under the hood of the ap2, there was some white residue towards the back of the engine compartment. It almost looked like overspray and was a little foamy. Does anyone know what this would be?

Also the ap2 seemed to have a rougher idle than the ap1. I could really notice vibrations with the clutch in. Normal?

Sorry for the long post but I am trying to discern the subtleties between the two versions and whether or not what I am experiencing is normal.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The AP2 should feel like it has more torque since it does have 10lbs more torque and it is geared a little different, but still has the same 4.10 final gear drive. If the AP2 doesn't feel as quick, it could be a problem with the car since they should be close to each other or it could also be that the vtec crossover isn't as big. Meaning since the AP1 has less torque, when vtec kicks in, it really feels like it is helping out a ton at about 5.5-6k. The AP2 is a bit more drivable in the low revs because of the increased displacement for torque so I don't know why it feels slower.

I drive an AP1 and love it to death. Nothing beats the sound of an engine at 9k. I'd take the AP1 especially since it has less miles. Even though it'll last you a long time, lower mileage is always a plus. I wouldn't be driven away from the AP1 since it has had a lot of owners. Since it has low miles, it was probably a garage queen for almost all owners. Mine had 3 previous owners before I bought mine and other than a spark plug recall that wasn't taken care of, it is in perfect condition.

Thanks D1sclaimer. The ap1's former owners were all "mature" drivers so I am assuming this is a good thing. I guess I was expecting to be more impressed with the ap2 over the ap1 but it wasn't so. Maybe the ap2 was driven harder, etc. It had a lot of rock chips on the hood and the passenger body skirt was heavily scratched. Maybe I need to drive another ap2 to be sure!

If both cars were in perfect condition, the AP2 would have more torque, but not much more.

The bigger difference is the suspension. The AP2 is maybe better for daily commuting while the AP1 is tuned a bit stiffer and is a bit more twitchy (and fun) in the corners.
If it were me, I would pick AP1 or AP2 based on how I planned to drive most of the time. If I were planning to use it for weekend driving, I'd lean towards the AP1. For a daily commuter, I prefer the AP2. Then I'd try to find the best deal within that class.

All that said, the cars aren't nearly as different as some would have you believe. Either way you choose, you'll have a blast.

Thanks Swingle1!

J'sS2k, not trying to be controversial. I know people are passionate about their ap1s and ap2s. What I am trying to figure out is if the ap2 I drove is indicative of how ap2s drive in general. Right now I would sway to the ap1 just because it seemed more fun to drive and had more kick. I think I really need to try another ap2 to see if the one I drove was out of the norm.

Not sure where there's any controversy, but oh well.

Phins, I'd definitely drive several before pulling the trigger. Let us know which way you decide.

It was at S2Ki.com! Maybe the people there are more combative!

They're both great'n the thing that'z gonna make the best deal, at this, the most inopportune time'a the year'da pick up a raggtopp, is whu'cher gettin' fer yer money.
Pay attention for anythin' that'll knock one car oud'a contention, but neither one is less than the other.
Go for the best deal.

ITs what ever you end up with(ap1 or ap2) you love it and wouldnt trade it for the other. Thats what i have pretty much understood from talking to others. I'm die hard Ap1 but thats because thats what i bought. I've never met a S2K owner that wanted to trade for the other. They are both awesome cars. Even if i can walk on a Ap2.lol

Great choice! But either would have been a great choice. Looking forward to your continued input.

Thanks. Inputs may not come for quite a while. I will probably have a lot of questions on this model. Hopefully, I can do an audio upgrade this weekend.
