New Member asking advice

I am looking to buy an s2000.
Don't know very much about the car as I have been a MINI guy for the last 20 years. I am thinking from the research that I've done that an AP2 is what I want. Are there any year or years that are preferred over others? I was thinking 2006 to 2009. What are the more rare colors? Anything mechanical that I should be looking for? This is a car that I want to keep and drive for a long time. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks D&D

All depends on your preference. If you want something more raw, go with the AP1 (00-03). You really can't go wrong with any year as long as its mechanically sound. Good luck in your search!!

Here are some stats:
Total S2000's - 66,860
Total AP1's - 36,968
Total AP2's - 29,892
Total CR's (including those w/o a/c and audio) - 699
Total CR's without a/c and audio - 59
First S2000 - MY00 serial #27
Last S2000 - MY09 serial #357
Last S2000 from Tochigi - MY04 serial #6062 (11th digit of VIN = "T")
First S2000 from Suzuka - MY04 serial #1 (11th digit of VIN = "S")
Most common color - Silverstone (18,814)
Least common color - Apex Blue (200)
Most common color combination - Silverstone / Black (13,261)
Least common color combination - Grand Prix White / Yellow/Black (90)
Black Interiors - 47208
Blue Interiors - 6148
Red Interiors - 6986
Red/Black Interiors - 3896
Tan Interiors - 1923
Yellow/Black Interiors - 699

The first cars out, the AP1s, go to a higher RPM but suffer from some mechanical issues in the head. The AP2s correct the problems. The later Ss have VSA which have saved many drivers from disaster, myself included. I have an 09.

This car is very sensitive to tires, alignment and straight frames. Avoid salvage cars or ones that have been in some kind of collision. Higher prices will be found with stock cars that have not been mistreated or tracked much.

I would make sure the VIN numbers all all present and accounted for. Bone up on how to perform inspections.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

If you want to keep and drive it for a long time, I would suggest a low mileage car regardless of year. Good luck with your search!!

Thanks for the info. I am on the hunt for a low milage car. 2008 or 2009 is my preference and I know I will have to pay the price for a cherry car. Defiantly looking for one of the more rare colors. Thanks again I am in no hurry but will jump when the right car shows up. I have found a lot of good info on the site, nice chatting.

You will pay for a cherry car and finding one like that in your favorite color will be hit or miss. California/South West cars will be rust free. I found mine in Phoenix, purchased it from a dealer without actually seeing the car. Two weeks later I flew down and drove it home.

I paid top estimated value dollar for it as it was low milage, one owner, stock car in the color I wanted: Rio Yellow. Only 38 of those bad boys for 09.

Love it still.
