Illinois to Iowa in Winter of 2017-18

Since horrible cold weather is looming, I thought I'd share an experience from Feb. 2018:

My wife and I were taking a weekend trip from Illinois to Iowa, near to Iowa City. We'd prepared to drive our infallible Toyota FJ Cruiser, which rocks mud/snow/off-road tires, but the weather gods smiled down with a forecast high of 55 degrees and little precipitation. After considerable debate, I narrowly convinced my wife to take the S2000. After all, how bad could any precipitation be, if the high temp was 55? I'll just slow down, I said.

Slow down I did. Two hours of the drive were as pictured, snowing 2" per hour. I was fairly confident, since I daily the car year-round, but my wife was white-knuckled. Even worse, the windshield seal was weak, so we had to wear ear plugs to reduce the 94 dB of wind noise (we measured it), so we couldn't converse or listen to music. Our little communication consisted mainly of my wife berating me for not taking the FJ .

The drive home was dry, but the winter tires, Blizzaks, were soft and squishy at higher speeds, so the car didn't handle well at all, and I didn't really enjoy the drive. After we got home, the car made the garage smell like burning was coming from the winter tires, their life probably shortened by those higher speeds.

I applied fresh Shin-Etsu to the seals, and installed shims in the strikers, which solved the noise problem. I have Dunlop Direzza IIIs on the car now, and I'm dying to take just one quick road trip before I have to remove them for the cold season.
