Vortech V3 needs more...

Who here has some knowledge and experience with the Vortech V3 on the s2000? I'm thinking about more powa and not sure which direction to go.

I checked with Vortech and they say that the SCi trim with our engines is nearly maxed out and that the next step is to either upgrade the unit to the Si trim and/or change the pulley to 3.8. Going from 4.2 to 3.8 pulley would put me around 12psi of boost.

So, should I be modest and just get the 3.8 pulley and retune? Or pay $400 to have my V3 unit upgraded to the Si trim? Or maybe do both?

The only concern i have with the Si trim is if i might over spin it at 8500 rpm.

I'd take a swing at the pulley first.

I was really close to pulling the trigger on one these kits a couple days ago. It's a beautiful kit and puts down better power than most of the other basic kits out there.

There was a group buy that just ended, and I was trying to workout getting the kit shipped out of state to avoid sales tax since shipping was free, but couldn't work it out. It was great deal they had going.

You should get this kit.

Between the horror stories and my history of grief with the Jacksons, I decided to go with the SOS SC. It's not as quiet but it's also not maxed out straight out of the box.

Apparently Skunk2/Kraftwerks has been doing a good job with correcting the issues they had previously.

How much more power did you add with the SOS kit? Did you upgrade to the bigger heat exchanger?

So I've got all the parts for my upgrade, which are ID1000's, AEM 320lph pump, Invidia TP, 3.8 pulley and FlashPro. I'm bringing the car in tomorrow to have the parts installed and I'm schedule to have my tune done this Saturday with Church's.

I have a 3" pulley and it will get to 17psi but I don't want a loud exhaust so I've got exhaust restrictions above 7,800 rpm. Those restrictions limit me to just over 400 whp or 460 at the crank assuming a very low 13% loss factor.

I did upgrade to a larger heat exchanger. It's 26" wide by 9" tall by 3" deep; a monster by any standard. I also put in a very large pump so that my total capacity ought to be roughly 10X that of the original SOS kit.

I don't yet have track logged IAT readings.

Looks like you got the blower nearly maxed out at 17psi. Are you running the 1220 blower?

I was talking to the tuner when I had my baseline done and he was recommending only to put in a tp as that was most restrictive and that the exhaust and headers wouldn't give much gains by changing those.

I'm running the 1200 blower, not 1220.

Ok so you have a little bit more room.

Here's the numbers from today's tuning session with Church Automotive Testing:

Yea I'm surprised at the numbers, and also the delta was really surprising. I was expecting maybe a 10-15% increase, which would put me right around 400hp.

I will be going to another dyno just see how much a difference there will be since my last test at that one. I had almost 360hp at this other dyno when I first got had the SC installed. I will post up the other dyno sheets probably next weekend if I get a scheduled.

After 88k miles total, and almost 75k miles on the SC, the blower has seized. Now I gotta figure out how to remove it and get it over to Vortech. I wonder if Vortech would pull it off and rebuild it (if possible) with my car at their facility, since I live about 1.5 miles away from them...

Ok so I sent in the seized unit to Vortech. They said it would cost over $1400 to rebuild, or they will give me credit for the seized unit to buy a brand new one for just over $1300 plus tax. So obviously I got a brand new unit built, and had the trim changed to Si.

I got the new unit installed and then got it tuned at Church Automotive Testing this last Friday. Knock was detected at 7800rpm and up. It was advised that I need to get an upgraded MAP sensor since OEM only works up to 10.5 lbs and the iridium plugs need to re-gapped to .024.

So as it is now tuned, the rev limit was brought down to 7700rpm and boost limited to 10.5lbs, to keep is safe to run until I get the MAP sensor and plugs gapped. Here are the numbers:

294 and 430 at 7700rpm isn't bad at all. I'm expecting to hit 300tq and 450hp at 8300rpm once I get the new MAP sensor, gap the plugs, and retuned. But keep in mind this is Church's dyno, which seems to be higher than everyone else's dynapack. I will also take it to my other guys that I have had dyno'd before, for comparison.

As for mpg, its still the same as stock if I'm shifting around 3-4krpm, staying out of vtec and not boosting. I got 22mpg on the last tank.
