starrman goes turbo

Well after 3 SC setups and plenty of tweaking, I finally decided that turbo was the correct route for my goals. I chose the Full Race EFR/IWG kit. Had a few issues with the downpipe, but they (Full Race) made everything right.

Before the install, I decided I would go ahead and build a motor specifically for a turbo, so got a block, put in a AP2 crank, lower compression pistions, new rods, new oil pump, bearings, BC Ti dbl valve springs, had some head work done and then slapped it all together. I had all the work done by NC Central Speedshop, which is owned and operated by a guy on S2ki.com who I have known now for a couple of years. He is a Honda guy and has had a S for years, been working on Hondas for years and a really knowledgeable guy. The shop is located in Wake Forest, NC.

The work was excellent and I don't think I could be more pleased. We put the car on the dyno after the new engine went in, so we would have a baseline and it made 206 whp...not bad for a low compression motor. After the turbo install, we are at 444/335. The boost is almost instant and I have no idea what turbo lag is??? Apparently the IWG that comes stock on the blower is...well...not the best set up. Full Race acknowledged this and has suggested a dual actuator. The 444/335 is at 15psi, but it drops off to 12psi. So I am going to add the upgraded actuator and will probably be closer to 500/365.

The car is amazingly fast and pulls very hard. Here are a couple of pics:

The bay is quite full, the downpipe is insane! Honestly don't know how fast just yet...have not had a chance to take to the track. Hoping to do that in the spring or late winter. Technically still breaking the motor in, have not had it to redline, other than the dyno...but it is scary quick.

Installed already, puddymod ran a black friday/cyber monday special for a stage 1.5 AP2 diff with 4.77 mazdaspeed gears and all hardware was cryo treated. 1 of the buyers backed out so drove up there yesterday and had them install it

Gears will help, I have 4.57 by PuddyMod in mine right now. I will probably go back to a stock gear in the spring...it is a bit much now.
I can certainly vouch for PuddyMod, he knows his stuff and is meticulous with your build. Great communication and even takes pics as he is building.

Although I'm nowhere near ready yet, you guys have no idea how refreshing it is to have a platform that's worth being turbo'd. FWD, 3500 lb four door just wasn't it.

Not only is it a good platform, but there are a tremendous number of choices...which means you really need to set a goal and then research your options. I unfortunately did not do that...but it was fun getting here

it's been said that an S2000 can be force-inducted into a supercar. of course, it takes a bit more than that, but it looks like the starrman is about there. true supercars breathe rare air; albeit for the S, it is force fed.

I have promised myself that I will only do a few more things to the car...I need to install a driveshaft and axles that will hold up to the hp, and I am going to install race seats...and after I burn the tires off I am finally going to get a set of "real" tires for the car.
I have owned a ton of cars and several that were really fast and some that handled really well, but I must say that this car has got to be the best of all.
