smoke in the engine bay

Brought bb home the other night and got a whiff that I thought smelled familiar. Apparently Honda coolant smells very similar to good old green Prestone but different. Had steam coming out from the hood on the driver's side. Popped hood and couldn't see anything. Today, I find No. 10 to be missing from the clamp forward. Sealing cap. $2.70 is the reduced price. I am in no quandary as it appears to be a repair that I can handle--and the price is right.

What is the purpose of the sealing cap and should I get a spare? Is it indicative of anything for it to blow like it did? What is left on the nipple looks like rubber tubing and the clamp (No. 1) that holds the sealing cap on the nipple. The end of the tubing looks shredded.

No. 6 is the water pipe inlet that is bolted to the top of the firewall.

The clamp and part of the rubber are still there. What is it and what does it do? What is its purpose? Think i can work around and just close it off?

I only lost a little coolant and the temp gauge never moved.

I read somewhere that cap needs to be replaced routinely.
