HELP. s2k will not turn over after rattle while driving

Hey guys, need your help trying to diagnose the problem. Ill give you a brief descrition of what happened. So my Timing belt tensioner has been making the infamous rattle lately so I was planning on replacing it this weekend. However yesterday on my way to work I begin to hear a rattling (almost like a baseball card in bike wheel noise combined with a heatshield rattle) whenever I hit the gas, whether im in gear or not. The noise progressively got worse over the course of the day. Finally, the rattle got pretty loud and i noticed a loss of power when driving home. As im turning onto my street, the car shut off. I go to restart it but it wouldnt crank. It has fuel, i can hear the pump turn on, and the dash lights up, but there is no crank whatsoever. I am leaning towards the conclusion that something went bad with the chain or tensioner, therefor throwing my timing off but id like to get some input on what you guys believe the problem may be. please keep random guesses to yourself and only comment if you have actual knowledge of what the issue may be, based upon these symptoms. Thank you in advance for any help.

Yikes! Got me on that one. I take it you have oil in the engine? I'm not being a wise ***, I just didn't see any mention of it. I guess the chain could have jumped a tooth if the tensioner was shot, but I'm not sure. I've done a fair amount of work on engines and have seen /heard that when the engine ran dry of oil.

BTW, what year, how many miles, any engine mods? Any CEL's pop up? When you say "no crank whatsoever," do you mean that the engine won't turn over at all or that it turns but just won't start?

See if you can turn the motor over by hand first.

should still crank without correct timing just wont fire. if the sound is just a big solid knock when you try and crank it i'd hit the starter motor with a metal object hammer ect while cranking see if it will fire.

Here are some pics of the timing chain area, IF and I don't know for sure but if the timing chain guides (the orange looking things) cracked or broke you might get that noise. Anyway your looking at some work to get things back to normal.

Getting to the starter on these things is a PITA. But you make a valid point.
