Congrats. However there are MANY roads like that elsewhere where it doesn't cost you hundreds of dollars a year to register an S2000.

The National Parks are good enough reasons alone to move to California - the roads are just icing on the cake.

So what's with this expensive registration? Mandatory on every vehicle, or just sports cars???

All vehicles.

As an example: Registration for out 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac in 2005 was over $1,000. Registration for our 2002 Honda S2000 was also over $1,000. The registratrion on the 2003 Honda Insight was $500. All of those were for ONE year.

We moved to Idaho later in 2005 and I registered ALL THREE vehicle for a grand total of $405 for TWO years.

Cost for registration in CA is based on the value of the car plus any extra fees or special taxes, not what kind of car your drive. Is it that much less in other states or that different?

Ouch! In PA, annual registration renewal is about $32 bucks for cars (if I remember right). I never knew it was so much more expensive elsewhere.

+1 for German Shepherds...great dogs!

I guess I never realized how other states worked or how inexpensive. I have lived in Nor Cal my whole life. My 2005 was about $230.00 for registration in August.

Not only registration, but my car insurance was cute EXACTLY in half by getting out of CA and into ID.

Home and sales taxes are also less.

In Oregon the registration fees are $77 every two years. I did go with the custom vanity plates that cost $153 for two years and then a $130 renewal fee.

Initial registration is $$ after you buy a car (because of taxes, etc.) but I think mine is under $200 with personalized plates. (I'm thinkin' $150-ish)

Guys, I'm not saying no other place has fine women, there are hot chicks everywhere. It's just Southern CA has the most concentrated population of em, everywhere you go, in ALL ethnicity.

I'm assuming you can't find a group of hot Armenian women loitering around Austin, TX can you??

Whenever I travel to other cities, I am always glad to be back in CA cuz of the eye candy

Austin has plenty of attractive women. but you can't say "Texas is best" just b/c of Austin! Live in San Antonio for a while, then you will change your mind.

Having to drive 4 hours to be in a city where there are a lot of attractive girls does NOT mean that our state is the best when it comes to population of attractive women.

Wow. Not sure what was the deal there, but I just looked at the registration renewal for my '07 and I paid $278. Our '07 Altima Hybrid is $200. My company pays for my Yaris, but that runs $173. We're in CA on the west side of Los Angeles. *shrugs with palms up*

I'm not touching the discussion of where the best women are. Just wouldn't seem right.

Well east coast girls are hip - I really dig those styles they wear.
And the southern girls, with they way they talk, they knock me out when I'm down there.
The mid-west farmer's daughters really make you feel alright.
And the northern girls with the way they kiss, they keep their boyfriends warm at night.

I wish they all could be California girls...

lol.... Putting the chick debate aside. Omigawd, hundreds of dollars more to reg your car in Ca? So what? The original post is about driving on spectacular country roads in the Sierras. On this small stretch he refers to (btw: wonderful), is surrounded by hundreds of miles of country roads in the mountains(hwys 70 & 32). There are several tiny towns, with better restaurants and hotels than in most of the country. A few hours the other direction, you are running up the Ca coastline (with even better restaurants and hotels). Another direction, in the desert. Registration costs? You are focused on the irrelevant.

I would only take issue with one comment from the original post. No cops? No way.

My first registration was mailed out to me this past Aug, which was $419. Anyone else have an 08 that lives in CA? I'm curious to see what you paid.

$419? Good lawd. What the h3ll are you guys talking about? How did a guy's post about a great road in the NorCal get turned into a tax debate?

Would rather hear about runs in other parts of the country. Great roads, vistas, restaraunts, hotels, and even the illusion of no cops. I know they are out there (been on a few).

btw. for the record. The $$ shortfall in California, in Schwartzneggers first year, was almost to the penny the amount Ah'nold rescended in auto reg tax. It is now coming back, but also includes the interest the State must pay on the loans and bonds Ah'nold floated to pay for the shortfall in the first place. Way to go terminat'ah.

See? Thats the prob with politicizing a benign post about a road.

I would have talked about the three great days of drives we had around the SF Bay area for S2KDays back in Sept., but no one on the site was interested enough to show up and join me. People simply complained about the cost and having to be a member.

About half way down the first page. I also see that you passed on the opportunity.

lol. I was really excited about "s2k days 2009 in San Francisco". But as it approached and I learned more about activities and that it was held in Dublin, it became a lot less interesting. There is no place in the Bay Area less "San Francisco" than Dublin. Yeah, the notion of paying $150 to essentially party there was hard to fathom.

But you are dissing this guys celebration of driving in the California Sierras, b/c of reg tax for chrissakes. "There are great roads everywhere and the reg tax is less".... wtf? Rather than inquire about that glorious stretch of sportscar country or post your own, you go off on Ca?

Plenty wrong with this State, the reg tax is about the least of it. And I still don't get what it has to do with the original post anyway. At the end of the day, living in Ca still beats living in most of the country. Be it roads, taxes, earth quakes, cost of living, or another b grade actor serving as a b grade guv.

You have roads like the Sierras or hwy 1 in Iowa, I'd love to hear about them. You got cheaper reg tax too? Great, the first round is on you!

You have roads like the Sierras or hwy 1 in Iowa, I'd love to hear about them. You got cheaper reg tax too? Great, the first round is on you!

If I am ever in Iowa, I will let you know.

As for Idaho, about the only roads I have been on in the entire state that is longer than 20 miles long and DOESN'T look like the one posted is Highway 84 and Highway 86. Every other road that I have been on has some nice turns and twists and has trees along the side just like the Sierras.

Yes, there are some BEAUTIFUL parts of CA and there are also some real cesspools. I have lived in both during my 38 years in CA. However, once I got out I realized that the bad aspects of CA FAR out number the good. CA is a nice place to visit, but..... well, you know the rest.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.
