How is that Mazda? Looks like a pretty cool little car. Granted, it's no S, but I thought it might be a nice car for my wife.

*sigh* I always have mixed emotions when I hear that sort of thing. On one hand it's nice to see a guy looking out for something cool for his wife. On the other hand, he just said in a round-about way that his wife shouldn't have an S, but a Mazdaspeed3 is nice enough for her.

Maybe I get all conflicted because I *am* the wife and I choose my own cars and I'd be all kinds of insulted if my SO brought me a car and said to me, "It's no S, but it's a nice car for *you.*" LOL! I think all hell would break loose. You could probably sell tickets.

What am I saying?! If my SO brought me a car I'd shut up and happily take it. Eventually I might sell it and buy something sparkly instead, but I'd take the car and smile that he thought enough about me to buy me something so big.

Welcome to JohnS the Noob! We're an amusing bunch here. Some might even say we're kind of laughable.

Hey...no trash-talking Mazda! They built the RX-7, and the 787B as well, which are some of the best cars to ever ride on 4 wheels! Yeah I know, the RX-8 is a joke, and the Miata is for........., but I will always say that when Mazda wants to get serious, they build a damn fine sports car!

The typical S Driver is not a woman. the typical RWD Sportscar driver is not a woman. Most women (sickening as it may be to us) does not give two shits what she drives as long as it's 'cute' (ugh, I want to barf just typing that).

Most of my girlfriends don't even want to ride in my car to go get Starbucks (Hence why I don't have many girlfriends). To try to pick a Mazdaspeed 3 for his wife is nice and considerate, something sporty, safe, and 'cute', but not an S at all that's for sure!

As sad as it makes me, most women and arguably a lot of younger men, should not be driving a car like an S.

Wait just a damned minute! A bantamweight sports car with near 50/50 F/R weight distribution, an exotic engine that revs way off the charts in RPM but has absolutely near zero torque (Yeah, remember torque?*sigh*) The S 2000 is a modern equivalent to those old RX-7's, the first body style that were such a blast to drive before all the weight gains that put it squarely into the slowpoke overweight GT territory?
Sorry for the off-topic but that was an Epiphany for me! lol

I would take that one step further. The typical driver (male or female) doesn't give two shits what he or she drives so long as it gets from point A to point B. I'm honestly appalled at the lack of driving skill of most people and even more so by their lack of interest in even caring to have some inclination as to the scope of what they don't know. This thing they drive can kill them and other people, but they have no interest beyond the MP3 jacks and "Push the pedal on the right to go and the one on the left to stop." This is not gender specific. I believe (and I have no stats to back this up so let the pummeling begin) that more men don't understand cars than do (same with women -- so I should just say "people") and beyond concerning themselves with if it's a "girlie" car or not, they don't care either. The average guy is nowhere near as clued in about cars as society would have us believe. Note I said average. There will always be examples who do not fall into the average.

True, which is why I followed it up with saying that if my husband brought me a car -- any car -- I would take it happily and smiling. And if it wasn't a good fit maybe later I would do something else with it, but I would be thrilled that he took the time to think of me and get me something he thought would make me happy.

As sad as it makes me (and scared too) most people in general (male or female) shouldn't be driving ANY car, let alone a high speed precision machine.

All I said was that I was conflicted on the statement because on one hand it was very nice of the guy to be looking for a car he thought was a good fit for his wife, but on the other hand it was kind of a left-handed compliment.

Of course now I'm going to get flamed by left-handed people.

Just saw this and the answer is one!
One diff ripped the ring gear off, of course and then rebuilt it.
I can hit 7000+ RPM wheel spin from a stand still in 4 gears.
It will rip your head off, handles nicely, and gets 30-34MPG but
it is a beast and as such you have to replace things periodically and tune it season to season.
I have several maps that are easy to load I mainly use two, one for the spring/summer and one for the fall/winter.

I had two first gen RX7's one of with some Racing Beat stuff on it and this car reminds a lot of the modded one. I just thought how I could do an effortless 180 degree change of heading if I wanted/needed to suddenly go the otherway down the street. It was almost second nature to do so.
So I agree with you.

That 1st gen. Wankle engine was a MoFo to figure out! You were lucky if you ever did really. I had to build one of those transparent engine models of the rotary just to get a good idea what an epicycloid motion even was! One thing I do remember, APEX SEALS! A real weakness of the breed then. The check engine fluids light?=Change engine light, due to some rotor bay perimeter case "O" ring failure and really common. Nearly every engine fault indication somehow led to premature total motor failure, and rebuilding? Ha! A dark, yet to be developed science back in the way back 1980's

But if you saw what COULD be done with one of those tri-point rotor Mo's done up right it was scary! Using motorcycle carbs modified for street car usage, along with a couple SuperTrap exhaust stingers, (with the stackable stainless rings for infinite back pressure adjustment) The sound it made was eerie, more 2 stroke sounding than 4 stroke, like a high performance chain saw with the occasional pops and ding-ding-ding's that sound so odd coming out of a car and not from a dirt bike. lol

But weren't these the real deals when it came to performance? When did they stop importing these? 93? 94?

Bi turbos was it or sequential turbos of 2 different sizes? AND RWD to boot! The HP figure had to be somewheres around what we get now, in the 250 ballpark? Looks like a little mini-Vette! lol

they're ok...if she wants big power, no...if she wants one of the best turbo 0-60 in less than 6 seconds for under 25k, then yes...it's a great car.

I will probably sell it anyway. I have upgraded/replaced almost every major mechanical part on the car. The transmissions aren't that bad. I think it is more driver stupidity than anything. Just look at the knuckle heads who go from 5th to 2cnd in the S' and blow their motors you can find a way to break almost any car.

I pounded the hell out of mine for years and never really had too much trouble. A carb wore out, replaced a clutch in one at 183,000 miles and finally wore the apex seals down in another but it was VERY abused and had 200k miles on it. I gave it away after letting it set for a year and some guy got it going.
I think 1995 was the last year for the 3rd Gen RX7.
