start to finish, hood project v.20pictures

i didnt want to borrow my grandpa's truck to drive the 30 minute drive out to pick the hood up from the seller, so i just took mine off, kinda wish i had a mullet wig or something. fwiw, the car feels unstable without the hood at highway speeds.

got the hood, this is uhh... silverstone? sebring? shit i dont know, whatever, it doesnt matter...

stripping the paint. this stuff is nuts, used mr kleen paint stripper... fumes were terrible, had a headache for 3 days

almost completely stripped, ran out of stripper and was having some more dropped off so i decided to..

...experiment on a small section to see how it shined up.. not too bad

after some more work the shine is coming out

i dont like the finish, the metal is still too rough, kind of satin finish

orange peel.. sucks..

i wetsanded the entire thing with 800 grit sandpaper and polished a corner to see how it looked

getting there.. 2/3rds of the way done

and this was saturday, up near the windshield it needs a tiny bit more work, but i wanted to put it on so a few friends could see it. i'll clean it up next weekend and throw a coat of clear over it to keep it from oxidizing (which hasnt been an issue) and keep bird shit from messing up the finish.

Very, very nice Turbo. Way cooler than some aftermarket hood, or anything else out there. This would probably look really cool on a black S2000 as well....but that's about it. I don't think it would pull off well with a blue, red, silver, and certainly not yellow. Let us know how the clear coat works out.

That looks awesome! I agree with Jim, it probably wouldn't look good on anything other than white or black, but I really like it! Props for being creative and doing a lot of hard work!

where da hood at

Nice work man!! I had been wondering if/when you were going to give us a follow up on the progress with some pics. I didn't see your vision at first but its clear now. Looks great. I know it hasn't been sunny lately here in Texas from all the cold fronts coming through, but I wonder if the sun is going to effect your (or other's) driveability.

If I may....... you should slap some black wheels with a chrome lip on there and you would have one sick-ass S.

Plans for the trunk?

The trunk is not aluminum is it??? Probably wouldn't polish up the same, and would probably oxidize much easier.

Have the cops sweated you for the hood yet? Im curious if there are any laws against that, cuz isnt it illegal to even have a CD hanging from your rear view mirror?

Regardless, looks pretty nice man

yep, i went around with a magnet, trunk's steel

ffuuuu

if it was aluminum i definitely woulda done it, much smaller than the freaking hood

i found a set of chromed ap2v2 on ebay and i was thinking , though i dont like chrome, i think it might match pretty well

s2000cop is a local police officer and he said it is not against the law. i cant imagine anyone would have an issue when you have fully polished tanker trucks roaming the highways.

me? probably 25+

however doing it again i would be able to knock it out in half that or less. i wasted time trying to polish it from the get go when i should have been wetsanding with 800 grit in the first place.

you're looking at two big cans of paint stripping gel and a plastic scraper

a pack of 800 grit and 1000 grit sandpaper and a palm hand sander to wet sand. if you electrocute yourself doing this i assume no liability, haha..

then a big ass variable speed buffer/polisher and a lot of polish and pads.

Great job!

I used 2 quart cans. you MUST do this outside in an open space, even though i was on my covered back porch with a fan, after stripping the entire thing i had a killer headache and the next day my face was slightly red, like i had been in the sun for a few hours.

thanks for the kind words guys.

I recommend a low odor aircraft stripper. does a really nice job with out harming gel coats. when i strip down my hoods i usually try to keep them in the dappled sun, coat them very liberally and leave them for about 45 minutes, or until the gel has completely dried. this insures that a) the chemical has done as much of the work as possible b) the dappled sun keeps the whole surface a little cooler so you can work the stripper in with out fumes rising in your face. and c) waiting till it is all dry flakes makes clean up a lot easier and safer for your skin. usually two thick coats prove enough to get off the majority and i just reuse my paintbrush for touch ups on the small stuff, none of which should be much bigger than a pea. this can be done with a little over half a quart and half a day.

and props for real on the hood! is a perfect example of how far a little elbow grease, pocket change and creativity can take you! and it looks great! btw noticed your a buick fan as well my hommies building a pretty sweet grand national drag car n i always hittin up the buick quick 16 wit him come summer time. so respect on that too.
