high pitched soft tone sound

Hey from 1000 to 3000 rpms at random start and end points in that rev range i get this high pitched sound that has soft tone that kinda sounds like that sound people used to use in classrooms as their ring tone that only young people can hear? But i digress....

Other than that the car runs great. I was just wondering if this is a telltale sign of future mechanical failure or something like that

Any Advice guys?

that was a joke. as in you wont be able to hear it because only young ..ok never mind.

It may be a vacuum leak. Check all hoses and connections. Get your ear down in there but fer christ sakes dont get your hair cought in anything thats moving.

Was a trick i learned back in the day to spritz WD40 on all the hoses one at a time and listen for a change. It did work but made a helluva mess. The WD40 would temporarily seal the leak.

Listen up sonny boy.......can't hear sounds over the internet.

If you, with your infinite wisdom, cannot pinpinpoint where the noise comes from, then I recommend you find someone who actually knows something about fixin' cars.

Here's what you don't know, kid.
S2000's make every kind of noise you can describe, and they are mostly attributed to normal operation. It squeaks, rattles, moans, makes gear nose, clunks and is overall a very loud car. When you have a real problem, it will present itself.
By the way " high pitched low tone " is a complete contradiction.

You know what I find funny here I mean even funnier than your horrible description, the fact that you brought up the sound that only young people can hear and dmaye made a very obvious joke and you didnt get it at all. Do you honestly think that with the information you gave us we should be able to give you any real suggestions? I mean witht that information you just gave me I am going to tell you its def your pcv valve rattling its time to upgrade.

Jagg your cut and paste skill level is that of a hairy assed baboon

Welll Jagg if you could actually read (I know school right?) my description is "high pitched with a soft tone" which means the sound is in the treble part of the audible sound spectrum and soft tone means its easy on the ears

One more thing

Come one s2000isu i expected better from you.

I know for a fact there are plenty of "clicking noise, engine noise, etc." threads in this forum and none of them have as detailed description as i did. I mean for christ sake someone started a thread saying, " theres a clicking noise in my engine bay." and all the answers on that thread were proffessional. Ya thats a way better description than what i gave

Well after reading your description a second time I still have no idea what it could be. I would imagine it could be a bearing in something going. Maybe a noisy belt maybe your clutch is getting noisy theres about a million things that could make noises from your engine area and its very hard explaining noises over the internet.

What year and how many miles, does the sound seem to be coming from the front/engine? My 08 with 1800 miles makes a high pitched whine from the engine/intake at low revs and disappears at higher revs. Most likely the engine drowns out the sound. It's normal for my car, not sure about yours.

My car is a 2005 with 58000 miles

I have the top off of the air box with the intake mod but the whistle sound is different then the hum that comes out of the intake. I tried to locate the sound but since the sound is only audible when im rolling through the gears i couldnt tell if it was coming from the back or front.

i assume since the car only makes that sound in gear it could be the tranny or diff?

The high pitched humming noise is very strong at 2500rpm. YOu'll find it's quite loud at that rpm. It actually has something to do with the clutch itself. The reason I say clutch is because there are segregated sections in the clutch and when it spins there is air compression and expansion within the clutch / transmission chamber. THis compression and expansion (dependant on the rpm of the clutch itself) causes a nice hum / subtle whine. It's actually really nice to hear, I love it alot.

Also notice the car whilst in crusing mode, seems to run very smoothly at 2500pm say in 4th, 5th or 6th gear. It's because there is optimal combustion for fuel economy. Driving around 2500rpm in 6th gear is how they measure 11.9L / 100km

WORD!
I have very sensitive hearing and I can hear the gear whine pretty good from the tranny. Sounds like the old 65 Mustang my buddy had when I was kid. Also, I agree with the noisy car bit. I hear a slight "pop" every now and then from back when gently, but abruptly accelerating or abruptly decelerating with the gears i.e. engine braking. It does not sound like anything of substance. It sounds like the top shifting a slight bit.
I love the car but it is a roadster of small proportions and as such you are much more intimately connected to the car and it's running gear than in an otherwise more portly car.

BUT GOD, I do adore the 9000RPM wail it shrieks out. It reminds of an itty F1 car. That is a good sound indeed.

This is my second convertible and you hear every creek, groan, snap and pop. Just the nature of the beast. As far as the noise goes it is the humming of the clutch and tranny. It's in my car too. Call it bad harmonics or whatever.

Nothing to worry about.

Agree, gets pretty intoxicating redlining this engine. I have a 5 mile commute every day, but it's thru a tunnel. I love the reverb off the wall. This is with the stock exhaust too.

Hey Glenn 1, have you tried to remove the top air filter box resonator and installing a cone K&N filt? I have exactly this setup and my gosh, the engine roars and screams like no other engine i've heard.

Intoxicating is absolutely right!!!

Here's the definitive way to find where a noise is coming from in your engine compartment.

Get one of these.

Put the big end on your ear. Have someone rev your motor. Move the little end around till you isolate the noise. Do not stick it in the belt

Now get one of these.

and enjoy your new beer bong.

Yep, I have a drop in K & N cone filter, but no, I haven't removed the top off the filter box. All that will do is give you more intake noise, but may actually hurt hp, as you're now drawing in hot air from the engine compartment and not cooler air from the front of the car that enters thru the snorkel on the front of the air box.

i totaly agree with you, actually i was confused, if i remove box it gives more space to engine compartment helps get more air to engine rather than packed space, other thing i was thinkin that the box itself would be hot, well if u confident please let me know more,
