F20C F22C Engine Acoustics

I created this thread as a discussion of various engine acostics based on different configurations of what people may have. For example.

I have a K&N air filter with the stock air box. The engine sounded a nicely tuned machine.

I then decided to take off the top stock box (resonator) and found that the engine behaves with much more of a growl at sub-vtec engagement. After Vtec, the engine acoustics literally "roar" to a much more aggressive note.

I have seen other S2000's tuned with various parts such as test pipes, stage 1/2 cams, exhaust etc.

I want an engine that sounds even better (yes I know I'm addicted) Although it may not sound as sonorous as a Ferrari, it is still an amazing marvel for a 4 cylinder 2.0 L powerplant

The next upgrade will most likely be JS Racing muffler. Although I've heard the Nvidia N1 single modified exhaust alone will make the car sound like an even better race car.

Then again upgrading an all naturally aspirated motor
will give the driver even better realizations of engine acoustics.

A few basic upgrades I'm going to find will give better acoustics and power from the engine.

-K&N filter, removed intake resonator
-Header > mugen / js racing
-Exhaust *** this is a tough one because I want the vehicle to retain it's quiet nature while driving passively.
however I want to fully potentiate the engine performance with the right muffler

IMO instead of an exhaust, just try a test pipe combined with a K&N FIPK intake system. That'll be really throaty and still have the stock sound level for cruising.

If you want sound, a header won't do much IMO. Mine hardly changed my tone, but then again, I'm still on the stock exhaust past my test pipe.

Keafun, removing the top of the airbox cover may result in a loss of hp as the engine is injesting hot air from the engine compartment. It may sound more aggressive with the cover off, but in reality you are losing hp from heat soak. Cooler air is denser, denser air = more power.

Can't speak for the test pipe as I don't have one and I don't think I'm interested but I'd second the intake suggestion. I have a Fujita CAI and it sounds awesome at WOT (without sucking in hot air like the airbox lid delete approach) but it's pretty much stock sounding otherwise. No performance gains worth noting though.

i have an CAI, megan header, test pipe, and an Invidia N1 dual exhaust, even with the silencers in it is loud, but that is what i wanted, i like to let people know i am coming or going. When i auto-x i take the silencers out and then she will really roar, i grew up with big V8's so i wanted a sound as close as i could get a 4cylder to come to that. Many may not like it, but to each their own, i have gotten many compliments from the way she sounds at the track. The race here is before i put the Megan racing header on, she now has an even deeper tone with it.

cliff note:
silencers out Vtec on driving under overpass, Really Loud!
